Geoportail – aerial map of France

Mapping France

GeoPortail is a French Government sponsored map site.  Right now it offer maps or aerial views and in 2007 will also have 3D views of France.  In the future there will also be comprehensive communal information.  It’s an exciting looking project.

It’s always exciting to see where you live included in a project and I found Domneuve.  I had to search for Montlaur and then scroll the map but it was a lot faster than Google Maps.  It’s always fun to find the shadow of the plane too.  (Maybe I need a life!)

Start from the home page by clicking on the box titled France Continentale.  That will take you to a page where you can search for your village or town.  Some of the aerial views are old but this is a huge undertaking, and expensive.  I can’t imagine that anyone has a budget that would allow all of France to be photographed from the air.  I’m not sure I’d want my tax euros spent that way.

Good alternative to Google maps.  I found Domneuve!

Hmmm…I tried the geoportail link but it didn't seem to work for me.
Spose it could be my computer.

It's working now, at least for me. I've expanded the post as well. The original had that 'jet-lagged in Brussels airport' feel to it.

Try the link again and please let me know if it doesn't work.
