This afternoon they finished picking the grapes at the Celliers des Troubadours. At lunch time they discovered that the part of the mechanical picker that separates the grapes from the leaves wasn’t working and that it would take a day to repair it. With only two hours of picking left to do they decided to go ahead and then separate the leaves and grapes after they went through the crusher.
There was a ‘last day of school’ atmosphere all day today. Early this morning I could hear Bernard and Antoine teasing each other and laughing. After lunch Bernard and Serge and two other men sat on the ground outside the main door to the cave, backs against the stone wall, legs stretched out on the concrete, and sang. Loudly.
It seemed like an apt time to post some photos of the process.
The tractor arrives pulling a wagon full of grapes and parks on the scale.
After the grapes are weighed the driver backs up to the hopper and tips the trailer of grapes into the hopper. (I’m quite sure these aren’t the technical names for the equipment)
Normally there would only be grapes in the hopper but today there were grapes and leaves.
From the hopper the grapes go through a crusher
After the they go through a separator. The stems, skins and leaves go into a wagon and are taken to a large skip – dumpster – which is taken to a distillery. The juice goes into a cuve to be made into wine.
